Girls writers: Jenni Konner (left) and Lena Dunham on set. image credit: The Frame

In a recent issue of Glamour magazine, Editor in Chief, Cindi Leive (CL) spoke with HBO's 'Girls' writer, Jenni Konner (JK). She gave some great insight as to what she did to have her evenings free for writing (which was her DREAM JOB) but still PAY THE BILLS, what she thinks is her co-writer, Lena Dunham's best attribute and what's a Glamour 'DON'T' in her office.
Read it and reap.
How she paid the bills while working on her writing career: (JK) "I became a temp, (worked temporary jobs) and it was the midnineties, when there was the Internet boom and the normal group of graduates ready to fill in didn't exist. It was just me. So you know when supermodels were like, "I don't get out of bed for less than…" (CL) "Ten thousand dollars -- " (JK): "I was like "I don't get out of bed for less than $21 an hour!" I temped at Chanel and the New York Stock Exchange and then I'd come home and write."
Get a Temp Job! Other ideas: Tutor, baby-sit, elder-sit, wait tables, sew/mend/tailor, run errands, event staff.
Her best 'Boss' Advice: (JK) "I am a big believer in not micromanaging; I hire really, really talented people and trust them to do their jobs."
What she's learned from her famous co-writer, aka: Her 'Lena Lessons': (JK) "She pushes for a truth that is beyond anyone's imagination… And she's a person who, at three in the morning -- literally, she's been working for 20 hours; she's just done some gnarly sex scene -- and she's exhausted, and the makeup woman starts to put makeup on her, and she says "Hey Patricia, how's your night going?" It's that compassion I can learn from everyday".
What's a Glamour DON'T at her office? "To be unkind to anyone. There's no room for that. Not on my watch"

DANETTE'S TOP TIPS:
1. SCHOOL: 'I don't necessarily think that you need a 4 year degree from one of those big fashion colleges. Personally I find that I hire candidates with strong CAD skills, a strong creative eye and innovative portfolio. (However, those 4-year schools do get you in front of employers on a regular basis and can be vital for internships and first-jobs out of college.) But I think you would do well with a 2 year degree with strong CAD skills, some business acumen and a portfolio that shows potential and passion.'

Danette keeps a vast resource library including fabric samples, design books and trend reports

Productivity Tips: Juggling a thriving career and busy family-life means that detailed scheduling for Danette and her family is a must. Try this: Rather than put it on your "To-Do List"… JUST DO IT!
More 'Secrets of the Most Productive People' here.
And we love this 'How to shrink your 'To-Do List' idea: Don't write things on your To-Do list that take under 2 minutes. JUST DO THEM.
